What is Newspapers in Education?

~  History of our organization

For more than 30 years, the Newspaper in Education (NIE) program of the Evansville newspaper has served the Tri-State by providing educational opportunities for teachers and students through workshops and special programs.  The NIE Foundation was established in 1999 to encourage the usage of newspapers in classrooms by area teachers by making papers more affordable.

~  Purpose of our organization

The Tri-State Newspaper in Education Foundation is a public benefit corporation organized for educational purposes.  Its primary purpose is to provide funding for school newspapers, to make newspaper curriculum materials available to assist teachers, and to encourage reading of newspapers by students especially those who do not have access to newspapers in their homes.

What is Newspapers in Education?

The Newspapers in Education is a program at the Evansville & Courier Press that promotes student literacy by using the newspaper as an effective teaching tool.  Through this program, the Evansville Courier & Press distributes 800,000 newspapers to tri-state schools each year.  NIE is a unique way for schools, businesses, agencies, and the Evansville Courier & Press to collaborate and benefit all of us!

Newspapers in Education get an up-to-the-minute "living textbook" delivered to their classroom every day.  The use of newspapers in classrooms helps improve literacy and skills in other subjects.  The program creates a lasting connection between students and our local communities.

Teacher Approved!

Teachers affirm that the Young Reader program assists them in their every day lesson plans and that using the newspaper:

  • Promotes literacy
  • Encourages hands-on learning
  • Can enhance every academic subject
  • Links young readers to their communities and the world
  • Improves test scores

Research shows that people who read the newspaper every day:

  • Vote in every election
  • Have higher incomes
  • Travel extensively
  • Become active volunteers in their community
  • Have children who excel in school and go to college
