What is Newspaper in Education? |
~ History of our organizationFor more than 30 years, the Newspaper in Education (NIE) program of the Evansville newspaper has served the Tri-State by providing educational opportunities for teachers and students through workshops and special programs. The NIE Foundation was established in 1999 to encourage the usage of newspapers in classrooms by area teachers by making papers more affordable. ~ Purpose of our organizationThe Tri-State Newspaper in Education Foundation is a public benefit corporation organized for educational purposes. Its primary purpose is to provide funds to schools to buy newspapers, to make newspaper curriculum materials available to assist teachers, and to encourage reading of newspapers by students especially those who do not have access to newspapers in their homes. ~ Strengths of the NIE programInforms students about current events and local news Promotes reading and improves reading comprehension Provides an additional resource outside the textbook material Helps teach about real lifeTeaches students about financial world - Helps with critical thinking skill
~ Benefits through your participationMake newspapers available on a more regular basis Foster broader participation by all teachers Provide in service training in use of newspapers in classroom Include contests to promote student interest Provide grade appropriate curriculum for the classroom
The Tri-State Newspaper in Education Foundation supports the Courier and Press Young Reader Services program. Young Readers Services coordinates the Vanderburgh County and Tri-State Spelling Bees and also supports various efforts through Tri-State school systems and other not-for-profit organizations. |
